Tips For Hairstyles That Are Hard to Pull Off

By Janey Dike on July 22, 2014

Changing up the cut, length, or color of your hairstyle can be a huge decision. And when it comes to hair, some decisions are, er, better than others.

There often comes a time in our lives when a quick trim or some highlights doesn’t suit our needs and we long for a more daring, revolutionary change. Urges to bleach, to dye, to chop and to restyle all enter our system and we drive ourselves to the salon.

But before you speak up to your hairdresser or hair cutter, keep in mind that some styles are harder to pull off than others.

While it can be beneficial to get inspiration from celebrities and movie stars, those lovely ladies and gentlemen also have the income and professional help to make basically anything look good. They have resources to get extensions if a short cut goes terribly wrong and multiple tries at dye jobs to get the perfect hue.

If you’re on the fence about a hairstyle that breaks tradition and ventures into the unknown, there are a few ways to know if it will be the right look for you. If you’re absolutely set on one of these creative hairstyles, there are also tips to make sure that you pull it off with confidence and style.

Pixie Cut: The short hairstyles are very in for females right now. Just look at the ongoing list of celebrities that cut off their luscious locks for an edgier look: Emma Watson, P!nk, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus, Anne Hathaway, Victoria Beckham, Rihanna.

And the look has been around for a while; iconic stars like Twiggy and Madonna also sported the pixie cut. But just because it’s been around for a long time doesn’t mean that it’s an easy look to pull off.

Before getting your hair cut too close to your roots, try wearing your hair close to chin length first to see if you even like not having long tresses. If you still want a closer cut after trying out a trim, then schedule another appointment.

Consider also asking for style recommendations from a professional for your particular type of hair and color. They can also teach you how to create the perfect look every morning. Lucky for you, short hair will be easier to style than long hair and take up much less time. Gone are the days of worrying about keeping loose strands out of your face.

Forehead Bangs: Side bangs usually aren’t too bold, but bangs that cover your forehead can change your entire appearance. Stars like Zooey Deschanel, Tyra Banks, Taylor Swift, and Rashida Jones pull off sleek bangs like pros.

Wondering if you can, too? According to style experts, bangs work really well for people with oval or diamond faces because the bangs give the appearance of less length. In addition, those with straight hair and hair that is of medium thickness will have the easiest time shaping and taming bangs. If hair is too curly or wavy, bangs may look unruly without extra time and hair product added into your morning routine.

Hair that is too thick or thin could also be a difficult medium to create the bangs of your dreams. If you have the less preferable hair types for bangs but still want them, you can still make it work. The bangs will just be more of a commitment.

Another reason bangs can be hard to pull off is because of the work that goes into them. They have to be trimmed often and styled every day.

An Unnatural Color: You’ve probably seen people with heads of hair that hold every color of the rainbow imaginable. From hair as red as the mermaid Ariel to the purple pastels of a fairy, some brave souls choose to break from their natural mane and rock out.

Paramore’s Hayley Williams wears a lovely orange color on top of her head while Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj (occasionally) work the hot pink hair.

If you’re willing to make this bold move, the most important thing to remember is to have confidence. If you dye your hair a crazy color, the best way to pull it off is to let people know you love it. Most likely, they’ll love it too.

If you don’t want to dive in all the way, consider just doing the tips or a few strands of dyed hair mixed in with your natural hair.

The Asymmetrical Cut: The asymmetrical look is risky, edgy and bold. You’ll stand out from the crowd and your new cut will add flair to any outfit you slip on. The style often involves straight hair and lots of angles and sharp lines.

While anyone can put scissors to their locks and finish with a completely new look, it’s important to understand how to truly pull it off. The asymmetrical look needs to match with the style and attitude of the wearer for the best effect.

If you think you have smooth, hip style, then you’re probably one of the best candidates for uneven layers. Any hair type can be used for this haircut, but straight hair will work the best and have an advantage.

As with bangs, the asymmetrical hairstyle also needs quite a bit of styling and upkeep, including regular trims and touch-ups.
