Trailer for Jon Stewart's Rosewater debuts!

By Christopher Waldeck on August 31, 2014

Rosewater is a new political film coming out from Jon Stewart.  This has me particularly intrigued because Stewart has not only proven himself to be a trusted face among young people for better or worse, but also has attacked what he believes to be soft journalism.  Personally I find him to be very slanted to the left as he has identified as an independent socialist in the past, but I respect that he goes very far into making news appeal to young viewers.

The story is based off of the story of  a former guest on his show, Maziar Bahari.  Jon Stewart has proven himself to be talented with television, comedy and acting, it will be interesting to see if he can further expand his storytelling on the big screen.  This movie is clearly a political one and it has hints of Stewart explaining what real journalism is in the trailer and how it is necessary for exposing the truth.  It is also a drama which is a major shift in tone from Stewart’s well known comedic talent.

The film will be released this November and it will be a truly intriguing debut to see if fans and movie goers will tune in to see Stewart’s debut.  Political films such as Rendition and Lions For Lambs have flopped at the box office as of late. While this film looks to have a smaller budget than those films and a grittier feel, it could still suffer the same fate. Stewart clearly made this film to tell a story and make a compelling case and it will be interesting to see if his name can draw an audience to see this movie. This movie doesn’t appear to be completely attacking a specific ideology based on the trailer, and is rather an incredible story about what happened to Bahari.  Nevertheless, it will still emphasize at least a few Stewart talking points I’m sure.

I’d like to see a political film that will draw in audiences rather than turn them away by trying to indoctrinate by hammering a message over their heads.  Too often, I see this happen in movies that are obvious based on the trailers like The Green Zone. Movies are about issues, but need a real story to power them.  Based on the trailer, this could be one of those. Let’s see what Stewart can do with this medium.
