10 songs, 10 artists, 10 years

What are your top 10 great songs by the top 10 great artists within the past 10 years?

Some songs sound like they have been written for you. Feel free to comment and enlighten me with an addition to my playlist. Following are my favorites from the deep, personal collection encompassing both great music and influential lyrics.

-Clap again by Akon, 2008: Haven’t heard from Akon recently but that doesn’t change that he has produced some of the most clap-inducing songs! Come back Akon so we can clap again …

-The calm by Drake, 2009: He is definitely (one of) the ‘legend.’ This song is one of a kind with provoking lyrics flowing on the light beat, making everything come together.

-Crooked smile by J. Cole, 2013: J.Cole knows the fun of being playful while being influential in a good way and this is one of my super favs since it provides a bigger picture of the society while shining a light on oneself.

-Only one by Kanye West, 2014: I would play this song in my down time and while sleeping … who would’ve thought Kanye would come up with something like this? Even he didn’t! I heard he had dreamed this song! Indeed it puts one in the right consciousness.

-I am light by India Arie, 2013: If you are feeling down, take a look at your real self!

-Day’n'nite by Kid Cudi, 2009: Very deep music and even deeper video! I actually haven’t really been able to understand it fully but that just makes it more appealing, given that the music is really fun.

-The show goes on by Lupe Fiasco, 2011: Lupe sure had a one-of-a-kind rising and to put that into words has produced this great song that surely had him on the show. I personally didn’t know Lupe until this came out.

-Read all about it by Emeli Sande, 2012: Especially for the introverts, the ones who are afraid to express, who are afraid to share … Emeli’s voice will surely make you sing.

-Beautiful by Eminem, 2009: He always sprinkles a touch of personal experience in his songs. But this one may be relatable to anyone who wants to tell people “you’d have to walk a thousand miles in my shoes, just to see what it’s like to be me!”

-Ambition by Wale ft. Meek Mill & Rick Ross, 2012: I believe there are many interesting name pronunciations that Wale is faced with … or maybe not since he has become one of the popular mainstream R&B guys. This song has been underrated though and I like it much better than the more recent songs that he has produced.

Bonus:

-The climb by Miley Cyrus, 2009: She couldn’t make it to the list … well, sorry Hannah Montana! But I’ll give the credit where it’s due: this sing has some moving lyrics.

-Mirror by Lil Wayne ft. Bruno Mars, 2011: Again I wouldn’t put Lil Wayne in my top singers unless he compromised some of his degrading lyrics on women and worked on his croaky voice :D … that said, this song hits hard!
