The Hottest Fall Trend: Layers On Layers
Whether you’re from sunny California or snowy Maine, you’ve probably heard of how cold Michigan can be. The state’s celebrity status for sub-arctic is nothing to joke about and Michigan students know how to dress for the winter. Sweaters, thick leggings, furry boots and warm scarves are essentials for any Ann Arbor resident’s closet.
But what about when it’s not below freezing? It’s easy to dress for the snow, but how does one dress for colder mornings and warm afternoons? The answer comes in many answers, but can be summed up in one word: layers.
Here are a few of my personal favorite ways to beat the weather confusion and still manage to look cute while doing it!
1. Boyfriend Jeans
Boyfriend jeans are the pinnacle of comfort while looking cute. They give any outfit a very casual vibe, but show you still put forth effort into getting dressed (read: they’re NOT leggings). What makes boyfriend jeans so great is their versatility in terms of length. On colder mornings you can roll them down all the way to your ankles for optimal warmth during your chilly walk to your 8:30 am class. After class, you can cuff them for a sunnier afternoon. Bonus? As boyfriend jeans are extremely trendy right now, they’re available at a wide variety of price points.

2. Flannel Shirts
What began as an article of clothing for lumberjacks exclusively, plaid shirts have become a college student’s staple. I usually start off my day with my flannel acting as a shirt, layering a tank or t-shirt underneath. As the day progresses, I love tying it around my waist—whether out of convenience or for style points, this look is so easy to pull off and gives your look a breezy tone.

3. Casual Sneakers
While it’s not quite boot season, oftentimes the most difficult question to ask yourself in the morning is, “What shoes can I wear with this?” While flip-flops seem inappropriate for the season, finding the right shoes to go with your fall layers can be difficult. Thankfully, there are a huge variety of casual sneakers that radiate style while still providing your feet with support as you trek across campus.
